Can You Use Other Fragrance Oils in a Waterless Diffuser?
RobShare
If you already own a waterless or cold-air diffuser, you may have wondered whether you have to keep buying fragrance oils from the company that made your machine.
It’s a question we hear from customers who already own cold-air diffusers and are looking for a wider choice of fragrances — or simply an alternative source of high-quality diffuser oils.
The short answer is: in many waterless diffusers, you can use fragrance oils from another supplier, provided the oil has been specifically formulated for cold-air or waterless diffusion.
There are, however, a few things worth knowing before you change oils.
What is a waterless diffuser?
Unlike a traditional ultrasonic diffuser, a waterless diffuser doesn't mix fragrance with water.
Instead, cold-air diffusion — sometimes called nebulisation — breaks fragrance oil into an extremely fine mist and disperses it into the air.
Because no water or heat is required, these machines can produce a much more consistent fragrance throughout a room. They're also capable of scenting considerably larger spaces, depending on the diffuser being used.
This is the same type of scenting technology commonly associated with hotels, spas, retail spaces and other commercial environments.
Do I have to use the diffuser manufacturer's own oil?
Not necessarily.
Many diffuser manufacturers recommend using their own fragrance oils. However, the important distinction is the type of oil you're putting into the machine.
An oil intended for a traditional reed diffuser, candle making or a water-based ultrasonic diffuser isn't automatically suitable for a cold-air diffuser.
Instead, look for fragrance oil that has been formulated specifically for waterless or cold-air diffusion.
It's also sensible to check the instructions supplied with your particular diffuser. Some manufacturers may place restrictions on the use of third-party oils, particularly in relation to their warranty.
Not all fragrance oils are made for waterless diffusers
This is probably the most important thing to check when choosing an alternative oil.
You'll find many fragrance oils sold online that are marketed for a wide range of uses — candles, wax melts, soaps, reed diffusers and diffusers. A general-purpose fragrance oil isn't necessarily the same thing as an oil specifically formulated for use in a cold-air scenting machine.
Scentro Home is different.
Our fragrance oils are formulated specifically and exclusively for waterless and cold-air diffusion. They aren't candle-making oils, soap fragrances or general-purpose fragrance oils that we're also suggesting you put into a diffuser. They're made for this type of scenting system.
That's particularly important because a waterless diffuser works by atomising the fragrance oil directly, without adding water or heating it. The formulation of the oil therefore matters.
So if you're shopping for an alternative oil for your existing waterless diffuser, don't just look for the words “fragrance oil”. Check what the product has actually been formulated to do.
For a waterless diffuser, choose an oil specifically formulated for waterless/cold-air diffusion.
Can I use Scentro Home oils in another waterless diffuser?
Scentro Home fragrance oils are formulated 100% for waterless and cold-air diffusion. That's their purpose — we don't formulate or market them for candle making, soaps, wax melts or other uses.
They're supplied ready to use and are used neat, with no water or dilution required.
That makes Scentro particularly suited to people who already own a waterless scenting machine and want greater freedom to choose the fragrances they use in it.
As individual machines can differ, we still recommend checking the instructions and warranty conditions for your particular diffuser.
Don't dilute fragrance oil with water
This is one of the biggest differences between waterless diffusers and the small ultrasonic essential-oil diffusers many people are familiar with.
With Scentro Home oils, you simply add the fragrance oil to the appropriate bottle or reservoir in your machine. Don't add water.
If you're changing from one fragrance to another, follow your diffuser manufacturer's instructions for cleaning or changing oils.
Start with a low intensity
Cold-air diffusers can be surprisingly powerful.
More fragrance isn't necessarily better, and you shouldn't need your home to smell overwhelmingly perfumed to enjoy it.
We recommend starting at a relatively low setting and increasing it gradually until you find the level that works for your room, your diffuser and your personal preference.
The aim is a beautifully fragranced space — not a fragrance you become conscious of every second you're in the room.
Choosing a fragrance when you're used to another brand
You don't necessarily need to know fragrance notes to choose your next home scent. Think about the perfumes, candles, hotel scents or home fragrances you already enjoy.
If you love fresh laundry and clean cotton scents, for example, you may prefer a clean, airy fragrance such as Milk & Petal.
If you enjoy something more woody, musky and contemporary, Another 13 offers a much more understated, modern style of home fragrance. It's particularly suited to people who like the current trend for molecular and skin scents — where a room smells beautiful without feeling heavily fragranced.
Two of our most popular choices, Imagine and White Patchouli, offer different fragrance profiles but are both excellent starting points if you're new to the Scentro Home collection.
And if you're not sure? Ask us. Tell us two or three perfumes, candles or home fragrances you already love and we'll happily point you towards the Scentro fragrances we think you'll enjoy most.
