How to bring hotel scenting into your home

Rob Wheeler

You walk into a beautiful hotel and notice the fragrance before you have even reached reception. Perhaps it is fresh citrus with a little woody warmth, or something softer, floral and musky. It becomes part of your impression of the place, alongside the lighting, furniture and welcome.

At home, fragrance can play the same part. You do not need a grand entrance or a perfectly styled living room. A scent you love, diffused at the right intensity, can make an everyday space feel more inviting.

Here is how to choose it and get the balance right.

Start with the scents you enjoy

“Hotel scent” does not describe one particular fragrance. If you want to recreate that feeling at home, start by thinking about what you actually like to smell.

Your favourite perfumes can offer a useful starting point. Do you tend to choose citrus, white florals, woods or musk? Those preferences can help you find a home fragrance you will enjoy living with.

Think about the room, too. You might want something bright in a living room where you spend much of the day, or a softer fragrance for the bedroom. A hallway is a good place for a distinctive scent that welcomes you when you come home.

Choose a fragrance with the character you want

A few different scent styles can work particularly well.

Fresh citrus with warmth

Imagine opens with bergamot and orange, followed by ginger, cinnamon and neroli. Black tea, amber and guaiacwood give it a warmer, woody base.

It is a good starting point if you enjoy citrus but want more depth than a simple lemon or orange fragrance. Try it in a living room or study.

Florals, patchouli and soft woods

White Patchouli combines bergamot with patchouli, peony, jasmine and rose, settling into blond woods, incense and musky ambrette.

If the name makes you expect a dark, heavy patchouli scent, this has a cleaner, brighter character. It is an option for a hallway or living space where you want a noticeable signature fragrance.

Understated musk

Another 13 brings together pear, ambrette and ISO E Super in a musky, understated fragrance.

Consider it if you prefer a quieter scent in a living room or bedroom, particularly if you enjoy woody musks in your own perfume.

Use the right oil for your diffuser

Scentro Home oils are made in the UK and formulated specifically for compatible cold-air and waterless diffusers. They are used without adding water or diluting the oil.

They are fragrance oils, rather than essential oils, and are not suitable for ultrasonic water-based diffusers. Always check your diffuser manufacturer’s instructions before choosing a refill.

The fragrance helps you choose the atmosphere; your diffuser’s settings help you control how much of it you notice.

Start gently and adjust

Begin with a low intensity setting and give the fragrance time to spread before increasing it. Where your machine allows, adjust the diffusion time and the pauses between cycles.

Room size, airflow, open doors and diffuser position can all affect how the scent carries. A setting that suits an open-plan living area may feel too strong in a small bedroom.

Follow the placement guidance for your machine and judge the result from where you normally sit or spend time, rather than standing beside it.

Decide whether you want one scent or several

Using one fragrance across connected spaces is a simple way to give your home a consistent scent. It also makes choosing and refilling straightforward.

You can use different fragrances in separate rooms if you prefer. Keep adjoining spaces in mind, though: scents can overlap through open doorways. Start with one area, get the intensity right, and build from there.

There is no need to scent every room at once.

Find a scent you want to come home to

The most useful part of hotel scenting to borrow is the attention given to fragrance. Choose something you enjoy, match it to your diffuser and take time to find a comfortable setting.

Whether you prefer bright citrus, floral woods or soft musk, the aim is a home that smells welcoming to you.
