How to Make Your Home Smell Expensive—Without an Overpowering Fragrance

Scentro Home

When someone walks into my home, I want them to say, “It smells lovely in here”—and then ask what it is.

That, to me, is the sweet spot of home fragrance. A scent that makes the space feel welcoming, considered and distinctly yours.

But getting there isn’t necessarily about choosing the strongest fragrance or turning your diffuser up to its highest setting. Sometimes, a little restraint makes all the difference.

What does an “expensive” home smell like?

There’s no single answer. For some people, it’s crisp freshness and airy florals. For others, it’s soft woods, warm amber or a clean, musky scent that’s difficult to put into words.

Personally, I associate that feeling with balance. The fragrance belongs in the room. You notice it, enjoy it and settle into the space.

Think of scent as another part of your interior: something you choose as carefully as the lighting, fabrics or colours.

Start with a fresh foundation

Before adding fragrance, deal with anything creating an unwanted smell.

Empty bins, wash throws and pet bedding, and let fresh air through when practical. Fragrance can add atmosphere, but it won’t resolve the source of a lingering odour.

You’ll also find it easier to appreciate your chosen scent when it isn’t competing with several other smells.

Choose the atmosphere you want

Instead of asking, “Which fragrance is strongest?”, try asking, “How do I want this room to feel?”

Fresh and welcoming: Look for citrus, bergamot and airy floral notes. These can be a lovely choice for an entrance hall or daytime living space.

Warm and inviting: Woods, amber and richer florals can suit a cosy sitting room or an evening at home.

Soft and understated: Clean musks and gentle woody notes are worth exploring if you want an atmospheric scent with a quieter character.

Our guide to choosing a home fragrance explores these styles and the Scentro Home fragrances that fit them.

Give your diffuser time before turning it up

With a waterless diffuser, start with a lower setting recommended for your machine and room size. Let the fragrance develop before deciding whether to increase it.

Where your diffuser allows it, shorter scenting periods or longer pauses can help you find a comfortable balance.

Room size, ventilation and placement all affect the result. Follow your machine’s instructions and use an oil suitable for that diffuser.

The aim is a level you enjoy throughout the time you spend in the room.

My personal choice: Another 13

Another 13 captures the softer side of home fragrance that I particularly enjoy.

With notes of pear, ambrette and ISO E Super, it has a clean, musky, gently woody character. I think of it as bringing a skin-scent style into the home: something understated, intriguing and easy to live with.

“Skin scent” describes its fragrance character here—the oil is made for a compatible waterless diffuser, not for application to skin.

It’s always a compliment getter in my home. What I love is that it creates an atmosphere without making the room feel over-fragranced.

If you enjoy softer musky scents, it’s one to explore in the Scentro Home collection.

Let one fragrance have its moment

A candle, reed diffuser, room spray and electric diffuser all working at once can make it difficult to enjoy any individual scent.

Try giving one fragrance the space to shine. You can still change scents with your mood or the season, but you don’t need every room to compete for attention.

For me, a beautifully scented home comes down to choosing a fragrance you love and finding the right balance.

That’s what makes people ask, “What is that lovely smell?”
