How to Use a Cold Air Diffuser for the First Time

You've got your diffuser. You've chosen your oil. Now what?

Cold air and waterless diffusers are wonderfully simple to use — but if it's your first time, a few small things make a big difference to how your home smells. Here's everything you need to know.

What is a cold air diffuser?

Unlike ultrasonic or heat-based diffusers, a cold air diffuser (also called a waterless diffuser or nebulising diffuser) uses pressurised air to atomise pure fragrance oil into a fine mist — no water, no heat, no dilution. The result is a stronger, truer scent that fills a room quickly and lasts longer.

Step 1: Choose the right room

Cold air and waterless diffusers are powerful, so start in a medium-sized room — a living room, bedroom, or open hallway works well. Avoid very small spaces like bathrooms or cupboards for your first run, as the scent can feel overwhelming.

Good starting rooms:

  • Living room (15–30 m²)
  • Master bedroom
  • Open-plan kitchen/dining area
  • Entrance hallway

Step 2: Add your oil

Most cold air and waterless diffusers have a glass or plastic reservoir. Add your diffuser oil directly — no water needed. A good starting point is 5–10ml, which will run for several hours depending on your diffuser's settings.

At Scentro, each 200ml bottle is designed to last for months of regular use. Start with a small amount until you know how your diffuser performs in your space.

Step 3: Set the intensity

Most diffusers have an interval or intensity setting. For a first run, we'd recommend starting on a low or medium setting — you can always increase it. Cold air diffusion is more potent than you might expect.

A good rule of thumb: run it for 30 minutes on, 30 minutes off, and adjust from there.

Step 4: Choose your scent for the room

Different scents suit different spaces — and all four Scentro oils are formulated specifically for waterless and cold air diffusers. Here's a quick guide:

  • Imagine (Citrus · Neroli · Black Tea) — bright and uplifting, ideal for living rooms and home offices
  • Rouge Eclat (Saffron · Velvet Iris · Warm Musk) — warm and enveloping, perfect for evenings and entertaining
  • White Patchouli (Bergamot · White Patchouli · Blonde Woods) — grounding and sophisticated, great for bedrooms
  • Milk & Petal (Violet · Peony · Clean Musk) — soft and clean, lovely for hallways and bathrooms

Step 5: What to expect

Within a few minutes, you should notice the scent beginning to fill the room. Cold air and waterless diffusion works quickly — don't be tempted to turn the intensity up straight away. Give it 10–15 minutes before adjusting.

The scent will linger even after the diffuser is switched off, which is one of the things our customers love most.

A note on cleaning

Run a small amount of isopropyl alcohol through your diffuser every few weeks, or whenever you switch scents. This keeps the nozzle clear and ensures the scent stays true.
